By Janice Elizabeth Small You can drop all pretense of trying to lose weight and let yourself go for the whole month, making the most of every opportunity to wolf down more calories. Or you can carry on eating when you're hungry, stopping when you're full, making the best of the food choices available to you - even at parties. And you can eat extra healthily on the days when there's really nothing special happening. You can give up exercise for the month and slump down on the sofa every night watching your waistline expand. Or you can keep active (even if you don't have time for your usual routine) by putting lots of energy into your preparations, keeping moving as you go about your day and fitting in 10 minutes of exercise (a walk, a stair climb, a few stretches) here and there. You can get completely frazzled leaving everything until the last minute and set yourself up for a huge amount of stress and comfort eating. Or you can spend just a few minutes each day on preparations and cut out last minute panics. You can make yourself sad and depressed by comparing your family party with the ones portrayed in the media or you can just decide to enjoy it, knowing that the media parties are the figment of the producer's and the designer's imagination (and the pictures were shot in August in a studio). You can spend all your energy and time finding great gifts for everyone else and set yourself up for disappointment by just hoping something nice comes your way. Or you can make sure that you have something you really want this year, by dropping hints, asking directly (some people would love to know - it takes the pressure off!) or even just buying whatever it is you want and wrapping up the perfect gift just for yourself. So you choose what kind of December to have. You can come out of it frazzled, overweight and disappointed or happy that you've enjoyed the break and haven't done too much damage to your waistline. Weight Loss Maintenance Tip - Staying Aware
By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP Stop Weight From Creeping Up By Staying Aware Everyone has small weight gains and losses but if those gains aren't noticed, and if the trend toward weight gain continues, then those extra pounds can become permanent. You'll know it because your clothes start to be too tight. If they get tight and stay tight, then you've got a decision to make. For me, when this happens, I notice the trend, and then work to reverse it if I'm getting a bit too comfortable at a higher weight (body fat) than what I really want. For me a small weight gain is difficult to notice because I tend to gain it evenly all over. I can lose 10 pounds and no one will notice but me, but my clothes fit better, my disposition is better and I feel so much better. They do notice the spring in my step and the smile on my face. Winter Weight Gain Last winter (early 2004) I put on the normal four or five "holiday" pounds and then come late January I noticed they were still there. Normally they'd just come right back off as I got back into my usual eating habits. I scratched my head and went about my life, eating about the same, exercising about the same, and then in March I thought, "Hey, what's up with this?" because I still was carrying around that so called "winter weight." I'd gained about seven pounds and could not for the life of me figure out why. I started to consider everything I could think of that could be causing it: Was it early menopause? Was I eating more than I realize? Was I exercising inconsistently? Had I developed more muscle? Was it bad karma or something I'd done in a previous life? What on earth could it possibly be? Come summer 2004 I was unhappy to find I wasn't happy with how I looked in shorts or a bathing suit, but too bad. I'm not putting off life because my legs aren't great. Hey, I'm pushing 50 years old, so give me a break. I just went about my business but I started to pay more attention. I discovered those Mike's Hard Lemonades I'm so fond of in the summer pack quite a calorie wallop. I also found I could eat half a sandwich and be satisfied. Slowly I started to cut back my quantities and pay better attention to the quality of what I was eating. Now I could eat half a baked potato (when before I'd always eat a whole large potato) and I WAS drinking a lot of calories. I also wasn't very consistent with my exercise. All these small things added up to a few pounds. So ultimately, I made some changes. I stopped the alcohol calories cold turkey, started to eat a bit less by portion control (having half a sandwich or baked potato instead of always having the whole even if I'm already satisfied). I also got more aggressive with my weight lifting and switched from my one body part a day to a four-day split which basically added about two hours a week to my exercise. I had always been pretty consistent with my exercise bike, riding on average about 3.5 hours a week all together. Here it is December and I find those seven pounds long gone. I'm looking good and feeling better and coming into 2005 without that extra weight monkey on my back. The changes I made were slight but it made all the difference. As it turned out, none of my earlier attempts at excuses were correct. I'd just simply gotten more relaxed with my eating and exercise and it was starting to show. I'm not ultra strict with these things either so don't get me wrong. You do not have to be an exercise fanatic, nor do you have to restrict your eating. My new habit is chocolate cake and ice cream nearly every night during the week but now I buy a single slice of cake (I used to eat the whole piece at one sitting), and I cut off a third. Tomorrow I'll cut the remainder in half, and the next night I eat the rest. Three servings instead of one. I add a quarter pint of Haagen Daz to my bowl and it's a totally satisfying treat to end my dinner. I do tend to eat my dessert even if I'm full from dinner, but hey, one thing at a time. If I want to sometime tackle breaking this habit, I will. For now, I'm happy with my size and my health So, little changes, big results. Now, coming into the holiday season that seasonal weight gain probably won't happen at all this year because I'm much more aware. I'll eat what I want and really enjoy the season, and maybe put on a few pounds, but come January I'll get right back to the habits I'm using now and they'll come right back off, just like they have nearly every year before. Four Important Tips On The Mediterranean Diet
By Ray Darken The Mediterranean diet the most recent significant diet observation globally. Ever wondered what it's all about? As its name suggests, it's the very food consumed by the inhabitants of countries along the coast of the Mediterranean. Over all, there are aprroximately 3 continents and 16 countries along this belt. The food habits and diet patterns vary across each of these different countries and sometimes even vary across different regions within each country. What is all the bubbling hype? Whats so special about the diet patterns of these folks that it is gaining so much attention? Recent studies show that the occurrence of cardiovascular disease and related disorders is lesser in this part of the world. While it could be due to differences in lifestyle, the important role played by the food and cooking preparation cannot be ignored. Let's Trace the origins Origins of the Mediterranean diet date back to the Greek Island of Crete (just to start with) where it was seen that the Cretans and the Greek lived longer than people from other parts of the world. Also, those who died of coronary heart diseases and cancers were fewer. Typical Characteristics Mediterranean food is extremely rich in carbohydrates. The consumption of fruits, grains and vegetables are high. Potatoes, beans, nuts, seeds and cereals are widely used. Milk and milk products, egg are consumed in moderate quantities. So is wine. Very little red meat gets eaten. Instead, more fish is eaten which is good because it contains Omega-3 oils which are said to enhance the immune function. A point to note What is unique about the Mediterranean diet is the generous use of olive oil. Olive oil, as researched by Hippocrates the father of medicine, is said to have a lot of medicinal properties. It is said to add suppleness to the muscle and skin, and soothe the effects of harsh sun or water. The content of antioxidants is high in olive oil. These antioxidants are known to prevent arteries from becoming clogged and also discourage other chronic illnesses including cancer, bladder stones, urinary tract infection, ulcers, obesity and so on. This oil is special because it contains monounsaturated fatty acids which decrease cholesterol formation. Which helps to partly explain the low incidence of cardiovascular diseases in this part of the world. Apart from olive oil, canola or peanut oil are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. It is imperative however to realize that it is not just the olive oil that makes the diet so affective. It is said that it is a combination of all these things that work together. The meal course Typically, the Mediterranean diet begins with appetizers largely salads. Bread is always there but never processed. Depending on the season, warm soups can be served along with bread. Vegetables, grains and greens form the core of the main course. To supplement this, fish and read meat are sometimes also served. The dessert is hassle-free with a cup of Turkish Coffee or a Moroccan tea or a pack of cookies. Mediterranean people also drink alcohol with their meal moderately. To reap the full benefits of the Mediterranean diet, dieticians recommend that apart from following the diet, it is also necessary to have adequate quantity of water (At least 6 glasses a day). Moderate consumption of wine is also acceptable. For those who want to avoid concerns of alcohol in wine, the suggested alternative is purple grape juice since it offers the same heart health benefits as wine. Four tips from the Greeks 1. Go Olive While shopping for food, you might look for canned foods that have the fat-free or cholesterol-free labels on them. While this is a step in the right direction, it does not protect you from the ill-effects of fats. Reason being, they might have high quantities of hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils which increase triglyceride levels in blood. When you buy oils, pick olive, canola or peanut oils and fresh is always best. 2. Choose fruits, vegetables and cereals to meat. Have copious portions of food from plant sources. Use Fruits for your daily dessert. This will help you curtail consumption of sweets that contain sugar and saturated fats. 3. Minimize animal fats. Go low on cheese, butter and processed yoghurts. Consume fish and eggs moderately eggs about 4 servings a week and fish about once a week. Contain red meat to once a month. Natural yoghurts and goats milk cheese and yoghurt ate acceptable. 4. Moderate wine. Its acceptable for women to have a glass or two of wine with every meal and for men to have two to three. More than this would be excessive. This is said to assist with the reduction of heart disease and some cancers. However, beware of over consumption. It can lead to high blood pressure and weakening of the heart muscles. For those wary of alcohol, try purple grape juice. Weight watchers worldwide are attracted to the diet simply because of the exceptional taste sensation and results speak for themselves. Keep in mind that like any diet, regular daily exercise (like walking)should be included to get the full benefits. The recipes can be exceptionally tasty which encourages you to eat more than you need at times. Presently, the Mediterranean diet is catching on all over the globe, partly due to immigration to other lands (awareness) but the diet itself is now catching the eye of professors and doctors who work closely with preventative medecine and diet research. Losing Weight-5 Essential Principles

I believe there are 5 basic principles to losing weight. The first thing we should look at is eating. It's the cause of the problem, but it's an enjoyable thing to do and that is what gets us most into trouble. So why not enjoy a diet! So the first tip. 1. ENJOY YOUR DIET.
There are so many diets around that there is bound to be one that you can enjoy. What's the point in following a diet that is hell. Unless you are a masochist. 2. SAVOUR THE FLAVOUR.
Enjoy your food. By that, I mean take notice of all the varying tastes and textures. Let it spend a little time in your mouth instead of using it as a bypass. You'll be surprised to find tastes you like and some you don't. 3. IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT.
If your diet works then remember that with most diets, the biggest weight loss is in the first week. It's a trickle after that. It's the same for everyone. If it works and you enjoy it then don't try to improve it. You may end up back where you started. 4. DO THE THOMAS EDISON.
There are different diets to suit different people. Hopefully you will try several. If you follow a plan and you do not lose weight from it then do not consider yourself a failure. Just consider that you have not failed. You have just succeeded in proving that the plan you followed was not the right one for you. Then move on to the next one. 5. BE SELFISH.
This is the most important point of all. You must be losing weight for yourself. Not for relatives or for the sake of friends. You must be doing it for you, and you only. After all, it is your body. How to have Maximum Interview Confidence
By Michael Soliatis Do you have butterflies in your stomach when you go for interviews? Its hardly surprising when the outcome is so important to your future life and prosperity and that of your family and loved ones. Youve already laboured over writing your resume and now you must face the prospect of an interview. A feeling of trepidation is understandable although many people have a careless attitude that can be just as damaging to your prospects. Either way, how much better it would be if we could go into every interview brimming with confidence. Not only will it be a more pleasurable experience but it will also have a very positive effect on the interviewer with the result that your chances of success are dramatically increased. The good news is that the solution is surprisingly simple to learn. In fact its so easy that you may be sceptical, so please bear with me whilst I explain. You know how a particular tune will instantly remind you of an important or enjoyable event in your life? Maybe its a tune that was popular when you met your partner. You may even refer to it as our tune. Or songs from when you were young bring back happy memories, which is why nostalgic compilation albums are so popular. When you hear these tunes again they act as a trigger that immediately puts you back in the happy frame of mind that you remember from the past. As well as happy and positive triggers, most of us also experience negative triggers. This often happens when someone, often a close family member, repeats something that always irritates us. At best we may just be irritated but, at worst, we may be sent into a rage that we find hard to control. Once you understand that your brain is reacting subconsciously to both positive and negative triggers, its easy to take action to change your reaction if its not what you want. The first step is to decide that the very mention of an interview will no longer bring on feelings of insecurity or despair. You will make a conscious decision to consider it a wonderful opportunity to promote yourself. Now here is the important part Sit quietly with no background noise or distraction and think of a time when you felt supremely confident and happy. If you are a sport player, it might be a recent event when you or your team had a great success. It might be an event in your childhood when you first accomplished something. The joy you felt when you learnt to swim or ride a bike. Or the applause you received when you were in the school play or choir. It might simply be when a parent said what a clever person you were. Whatever the event, remember it now and replay it in your mind. See yourself on a movie screen re-enacting the event. Remember what was said. Hear the sounds around you. See the scene play out in Technicolor. Remember the feelings you had. Notice what smells there were - whether sweat or flowers, dust or smoke. The trick is to relive the experience as vividly as you can. And as you relive that happy moment when you were so filled with confidence and the feeling that you could conquer the world I want you to clench your fist. I want you to repeat this every morning and again every evening. This is most important. If you have time and a quiet place to be during the day, you can repeat it as often as you like but please do it at least twice a day. Remember that on every occasion you must be sure to relive your happy and confident event as graphically and vividly as possible and on every occasion, when you are at the height of the experience it is vital that you clench your fist. Once you have done this exercise a few times try this. As you are going about your daily business I want you to clench your fist. And when you do youll find something quite amazing happens. Youll immediately feel happy and supremely confident. What you have done is to train your brain to associate the trigger of the clenched fist with a feeling of happiness and confidence. If it doesnt work straight away, dont give up. Repeat the visualisation and try extra hard to relive it using all your senses. See it. Feel it. Hear it. Smell it. Even taste it. Some people will find that they only need to do the exercise two or three times for the clenched fist trigger to work. For others it might take more practice. But the trigger will work for everyone because thats the way the brain works. Now when you are invited into the interviewers office stand straight, walk tall and clench your fist. Your brain will react to the trigger and a feeling of supreme happiness and confidence will flood over you. Sensing your happy and confident disposition, the interviewer will react favourably towards you. And the interview will be an enjoyable experience for both of you. Alternative and Natural Healing Methods Grow in Popularity
By Nourisha Wells After years of being ostracized by conventional medicine, alternative and natural healing methods have gained popularity with America's over-drugged population. According to a recent study of 18 major HMOs and insurance providers, 14 offered at least 11 of 34 alternative therapies or natural healing methods. Of the most frequently covered natural healing methods, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy and herbal remedies are the most popular. Even with an increase in insurance coverage for some natural healing methods, the general public is still undereducated about the benefits of incorporating natural healing methods into their normal healthcare regimens. By definition, natural healing methods or complementary and alternative medicine, as they are known by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), are a group of diverse medical and healthcare systems, practices and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. On most occasions, natural healing methods are used in conjunction with conventional medicine. For instance, aromatherapy might be used after surgery to aid in recovery. Natural healing methods can also be used instead of conventional medicine, such as using herbal remedies to treat illness rather than prescription drugs. The plants which you put out in your garden will have been started under glass from seed, so that, indirectly, everything depends on the seed. You must have good seeds if your garden is to attain that highest success which should be our aim. Seeds vary greatly--very much more so than the beginner has any conception of. There are three essentials; if seeds fail in any one of them, they will be rendered next to useless. First, they must be true; selected from good types of stock and true to name; then they must have been good, strong, plump seeds, full of life and gathered from healthy plants; and finally, they must be fresh. It is therefore of vital importance that you procure the best seeds that can be had, regardless of cost. Poor seeds are dear at any price; you cannot afford to accept them as a gift. It is, of course, impossible to give a rule by which to buy good seed, but the following suggestions will put you on the safe track. First, purchase only of some reliable mail-order house; do not be tempted, either by convenience or cheapness, to buy the gaily lithographed packets displayed in grocery and hardware stores at planting time--as a rule they are not reliable; and what you want for your good money is good seed, not cheap ink. Second, buy of seedsmen who make a point of growing and testing their own seed. Third, to begin with, buy from several houses and weed out to the one which proves, by actual results, to be the most reliable. Another good plan is to purchase seed of any particular variety from the firm that makes a leading specialty of it; in many cases these specialties have been introduced by these firms and they grow their own supplies of these seeds; they will also be surer of being true to name and type. Good plants are, in proportion to the amounts used, just as important as good seed--and of course you cannot afford losing weeks of garden usefulness by growing entirely from seed sown out-doors. Beets, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, egg-plant, and for really efficient gardening, also onions, corn, melons, celery, lima beans, cucumbers, and squash, will all begin their joyous journey toward the gardener's table several weeks before they get into the garden. They will all be started under glass and have attained a good, thrifty, growing size before they are placed in the soil we have been so carefully preparing for them. It is next to impossible to describe a "good" vegetable plant, but he who gardens will come soon to distinguish between the healthy, short-jointed, deep-colored plant which is ready to take hold and grow, and the soft, flabby (or too succulent) drawn-up growth of plants which have been too much pampered, or dwarfed, weazened specimens which have been abused and starved; he will learn that a dozen of the former will yield more than fifty of the latter. Plants may be bought of the florist or market gardener. If so, they should be personally selected, some time ahead, and gotten some few days before needed for setting out, so that you may be sure to have them properly "hardened off," and in the right degree of moisture, for transplanting, as will be described later. By far the more satisfactory way, however, is to grow them yourself. You can then be sure of having the best of plants in exactly the quantities and varieties you want. They will also be on hand when conditions are just right for setting them out. For the ordinary garden, all the plants needed may be started successfully in hotbeds and cold-frames. The person who has had no experience with these has usually an exaggerated idea of their cost and of the skill required to manage them. The skill is not as much a matter of expert knowledge as of careful regular care, daily. Only a few minutes a day, for a few sash, but every day. This is proved by the indication of a given level of blood alcohol content (B.A.C.) at the time of driving (0.08 units of milligrams per deciliter of blood) regardless of the alcohol tolerance level of the person concerned. Both the offenses can be charged i.e. the defendant may be convicted of both. There is no per se or legal limit employed for persons accused of driving while being under the effect of prescription medication or illicit drugs. The key focus of the inquiry is to determine whether the drivers faculties were impaired by the influence of the substances consumed. Despite there being techniques of determining the presence of the substances in the drivers bloodstream the prosecution of drivers impaired by prescription medication or illegal drugs is not easy.
